Bandcamp is also decent alternative and gives you hq download option to support artists.

The only place we have CD players is in our car, we mostly just stream, but he would really like to own some of his own music and I just don't know how "kids these days" own music.

I usually just gift people Spotify premium , but you don't really own that music so maybe buying vinyl is a good idea.
